In 1119, Saveh Ahmed Senjar and his allies defeated Sultan Mahmud. After the success of the expedition, he proceeded to Baghdad, where he agreed to marry his daughter to Mahmud II. As a result, he was able to take control of the strategic region of northern Persia. In 1141, a major threat to the Seljuk Empire was launched against the Kara-Khanids. In that battle of Katyan, Ahmed Senjar's forces were defeated miserably and Garshap died. It is said that Ahmed Senjar somehow escaped with only 15 horsemen and lost all the Seljuk lands in the Sir Darya.
When chaos broke out among the Seljuk tribes in 1153, the Seljuk kingdom collapsed along with Ahmed Senjar. Sultan Ahmed Senjar died in 1156 and was buried at Merve. It was later destroyed by the Mongols in 1121 when they invaded the Khawarizm Empire. Senjar's death meant the end of the Seljuk Empire as an empire because his successors controlled only Iran and Azerbaijan.
